Hi! I'm Mark, a teacher and tutor. I have taught classrooms, small groups, and individuals, all with the same aim: to guide, explain, and show students how to succeed in language and math, and have fun doing it! I honed my craft at the Stanley British Primary School, with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. There I learned the value of teaching with purpose, precision, and playfulness. I am a licensed teacher, former Huntington and Mathnasium tutor, husband, and father of two daughters.
I tutor elementary students in mathematics, reading, and writing, (see the Subjects page) and would love to meet and get to know your student. We will start with an assessment to see where your student has challenges and what we need to work on. We will then embark on a customized plan to specifically address your student's needs and get them on track to reach their goals!
I am located in southeast Aurora, just north of Parker, Colorado.
“I am particularly grateful for your enthusiasm, genuine kindness, patience, humor, gentle nature and your love of learning. The students can tell how excited you are about what you are teaching them... the children adore you.”
Jon Gottesfeld, classroom mentor at Stanley British Primary School.
“You are open, reflective, talented, and an all-around great person. I appreciated your dedication to students and your willingness to try something new or different.”
Janelle Davis, Teaching Partner, Dalton Elementary
We'll begin with an assessment and get to know each other to ensure that your student and I are a good fit. Once the assessment is complete, we will start our first package of four one-hour sessions. Sessions can be held weekly or twice a week, as we see fit. At the end of four sessions, we will gauge our progress with another short assessment to determine whether your student is improving and is more confident in their abilities. We will continue with four-session increments as long as needed to achieve our learning goals.
I cover the traditional "three R's" - reading, writing and 'rithmetic (or, rather, math: arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and data). There's more to life and learning than these subjects, but these are the foundations; master these, and the rest will follow!
More on this in the Subjects section of this site.
Our first meeting is in person at my house. Subsequent lessons will ideally be in person, but if remote learning is preferred and works well for the student, we can do that.
I do not use a set curriculum; rather, I base my work on Common Core Standards, as most schools do, and the best practices in the teaching of reading, writing, and math. I build on what the student is studying at school, so that their experience at can be enhanced.
